2011 Annual Meeting ... a Stunning Success!More than one hundred arts enthusiasts crowded into CalvART Gallery on Wednesday evening, June 15, for the Arts Council of Calvert County’s Annual Meeting. Highlights of the evening included awarding of over $22,000 in Arts-in-Education Grants to 19 Calvert County Schools to fund 46 different programs. Supervisor of Cultural Arts for Calvert County Public Schools and Arts Council Board Member Linda Patton thanked the Arts Council and the Maryland State Arts Council for their generous support for the Arts in Calvert County Schools.
Arts Council Board Member Joanie Kilmon announced the recipient of the Mary D. Harrison Award, given each year by the Arts Council to an individual or organization who exemplifies the ideals of Mary D. Harrison by promoting and enhancing the arts in Calvert County. This year’s recipient was Abigail Francisco of Abigail Francisco’s School of Classical Ballet which is celebrating its 25th year in the County.
Emcee and Arts Council Vice President Eleanor Nelson then directed everyone to the Student Art Gallery, which was dedicated that evening to Mary Beth Harry, one of the founding members of the CalvART Gallery who passed away last December. New signage was unveiled naming the Gallery the “Mary Beth Harry Student Arts Gallery.” In addition, the Arts Council has established a scholarship in Ms. Harry’s memory which will be awarded annually to a young aspiring Calvert County artist. “Mary Beth loved encouraging young artists, and therefore we believe this is a way to remember her that she would have appreciated.” Ms. Harry’s three sisters and her husband Don Harry attended the event, as did many of Ms. Harry’s friends and colleagues.
One of Mary Beth Harry’s paintings was offered in a silent auction during the evening, and raised $2,600 for the scholarship fund. Additional contributions were made to the fund throughout the evening totaling $1,400. The Arts Council will continue to raise funds for this scholarship.
Tim Crout, a friend of Ms. Harry, contributed $400 to the Mary Beth Harry Memorial Scholarship and challenged anyone reading this to meet or beat his contribution to the fund!
