Maureen Curtis
Like many artists, Maureen has been
drawing and painting for most of her life. She feels a major
accomplishment was to earn a degree in Fine Arts from Maryland
University while a young mother. Although the degree took seven
years, she was a proud graduate , but unsure of her direction. Then
the opportunity of a lifetime came up and she returned to her former
career as a flight attendant. Instead of having lots of time to
paint, life happened. She watched the world speed by at thirty
thousand feet and dreamed of painting. She studied the abstract
patterns and designs of the earth, knowing that someday she would be
able to devote more time to painting. That time finally arrived, and
yet she still feels the influence of her past experiences on her
paintings.
“When I look at the triangular shapes and diagonals that I use in my
paintings, which indicate movement, I think of flying. When I
conjure up an abstract collage, I picture a distant city or place I
have visited. When I paint a portrait of my grandchildren now, I
think of the strong link to my family. All the symbolism and
experiences of my life is interwoven in my paintings. I feel blessed
to be an artist, and blessed to be at CalvART Gallery.”
