The Generations Square

The Generations Quilt Square, hosted and sponsored by the Sunderland family,  hangs on their barn at Yoe’s Corner and Route 264 in Port Republic. This is their story:

This barn quilt is much more than a piece of art—it tells the story of the women who made our farm what it is today. Our farm has been passed down through generations, and the land we continue to care for exists because of the strength, sacrifice, and dedication of five incredible women. They protected this farm, preserved its legacy, and ensured it would continue for future generations. Without them, we truly wouldn’t be where we are today. Every symbol in this quilt was chosen with intention to honor one of these women and the values they carried with them:

• Olive – peace, prosperity, wisdom, and victory

• Lemon – protection, creativity, and joy

• Cedar branch – strength, protection, longevity, and wisdom

• Star – guidance, hope, dreams, and eternity

• Fig – prosperity, abundance, and peace

As this quilt finds its home on our barn, we hope it serves as a reminder that farming is about so much more than the land itself. It’s about family, heritage, resilience, and the people whose love and hard work made it possible for the next generation to continue the tradition. This quilt is our way of honoring the women who came before us. Their legacy lives on in every field we plant, every harvest we gather, and every season we’re blessed to spend on this farm. We are forever grateful for the foundation they built and proud to carry their story forward.
